OUR STORY
- November 2024: The Breaking Point -Fix Vineyard Parking began after a single weekend exposed a citywide problem. In November 2024, approximately 200 residents were booted at Lakefront following the rollout of a city parking pass system that many residents had not been informed about. Vehicles were immobilized overnight. Residents woke up unable to get to work, school, or family obligations without pay $75 to remove the boot. While enforcement escalated, education had not occurred.Jacob Wood began documenting what was happening in real time posting photos, videos, and resident accounts on social media to show the scale and impact of the enforcement. At the same time, he began passing out flyers door-to-door, explaining the City’s new parking policy and how residents could attempt to comply information the City itself had not effectively provided. What began as documentation quickly became organizing.

- Organizing the Response -As more residents came forward, it became clear the issue was not isolated to Lakefront. Similar problems were affecting the Vine, Millpoint, Edgewater, Waters Edge condos, The Preserve, and other developments across the city.Jacob Wood organized a petition calling for the City’s parking pass policy to be revoked, and an end to predatory towing. The response was immediate.More than 400 residents signed the petition, sharing stories of predatory towing, parking shortages, and enforcementThe petition formalized what residents already knew: this was a systemic policy failure.

- Fix Vineyard Parking: A Community Takes Shape -Out of the petition effort, Fix Vineyard Parking was formally created as an organizing group.More than 400 residents joined, many of them younger residents and renters who had never participated in local politics before. The group became a central space for sharing information, coordinating outreach, and mobilizing around parking reform. This was not a traditional political organization. It was resident-led, and driven by people who felt unrepresented and unheard. For many, it was the first time they felt they had a seat at the table.

REFORM AGENDA

Eliminating the City Parking Pass SystemThe City’s parking pass system created confusion, inconsistent enforcement, and unnecessary penalties for residents without increasing available parking.Fix Vineyard Parking supports:Removing the City parking pass requirementAllowing lawful parking without reliance on digital or physical passesReplacing pass systems with clear, enforceable rules residents can reasonably follow2. Ending Predatory Towing PracticesParking enforcement should correct behavior—not trap residents through surprise penalties.Fix Vineyard Parking supports:A mandatory 24-hour notice before any booting or towingEnding the use of spotters for enforcementEstablishing clear, uniform enforcement standards citywide3. Ensuring Adequate Parking in New DevelopmentMany parking shortages are created at the planning stage. Our Mission
Fix Vineyard Parking exists to represent and advocate for younger residents students, young professionals, renters, and those starting families, who are most affected by parking shortages and enforcement practices but are often underrepresented in local decision-making.The organization works to advance parking policies that reflect how people actually live, work, and commute, ensuring access to safe, predictable parking without unnecessary penalties or displacement. Fix Vineyard Parking prioritizes fairness, clarity, and adequate parking supply so residents can focus on building their lives, careers, and families without fear of sudden enforcement or towing.Through community organizing, policy advocacy, and implementation support, Fix Vineyard Parking helps ensure that the voices of younger residents are heard and that parking systems serve people, not the other way around.
